Zoe Kravitz understands the struggles of being a Black actress with naturally curly hair, and is open about the struggle she faces. Zoe recently shared that when she goes to photo shoots, she often has to bring her own hair stylist who is familiar with styling natural curls with her. After having arrived at several shoots where the hair stylist didn’t know how to work with her hair, she took matters into her own hands.
However, despite bringing along her own stylist, Zoe has expressed frustration that despite all the work they do, her stylist rarely gets the credit. She says the credit for her entire look often goes to the stylist who didn’t know how to manage her hair in the first place. She finds that one person is often responsible for the majority of the work and is never credited for what they do.
After having these experiences, Zoe has made it her mission to speak up. She finds herself irritated by make up artists who don’t know how to match her complexion or don’t bring the correct colors of make up with them to shoots, as well as stylists who can’t style natural hair. Despite saying her outspokenness has earned her a reputation in Hollywood as being “difficult”, she isn’t afraid of any backlash she might receive. She intends to continue speaking up about the inequalities Black actresses in the limelight face as opposed to other actresses, and encourages the industry to work towards change. Since she’s received roles she believes were meant for others, Zoe is hopeful that change is finally happening.
