Recently, R&B singer Tinashe has recently become the brand ambassador for John Freida “Hair Talks- Make Your Statement” campaign. The new initiative is encouraging women to take pride in their hair. Tinashe feels especially passionate about this campaign, as she has struggled for years to learn to love her natural curls.
As a child, Tinashe wore her natural curls, but didn’t know how to care for them. Since she didn’t have anyone who could teach her how to manage her curls, she struggled for years to learn how. Once she grew older, she began scouring the internet for ideas on how to care for her curls, and found many suggestions in blogs. While she was able to learn from other people’s experiences, she found it difficult to find curls that looked like hers. There just weren’t many blogs that featured black curly hair.
While she has learned to love her natural curls, Tinashe often received comments about her hair that hurt her confidence as a young woman. When wearing her hair straight one day, she was told by a peer that her hair looked so much better that way, causing her self-esteem to take a hit. While she lost a lot of confidence in her naturally curly hair, she bounced back and began to love her hair again.
Tinashe cares for her hair by avoiding washing it too often. To keep it from becoming dry, she deep conditions regularly. Since her curls tend to be on the drier side, she often has to hydrate it. To keep her curls from becoming damaged, she avoids using heated tools to style it. Her style is based upon what she’s doing that day, and where she goes. If she’s doing a concert, she tends to leave her curls loose and tie them up after the show. Her worst experiences with her curls was during an incident of bleaching gone awry, and when she got disastrous bangs.
As the face of John Frieda, Tinashe hopes to help other women embrace their natural curls. To read more about Tinashe and the new campaign, click here .
