About a decade ago, women with naturally curly hair began a quiet, almost unnoticed movement to reclaim their natural curls. At the time, now popular platforms like Twitter and Instagram didn’t exist, and Facebook didn’t provide the anonymity many women were seeking. In an effort to get more information about cutting off relaxer-damaged hair and working with their newly sheared hair, women turned to YouTube. One after another, channels began appearing with natural women giving advice on care, maintenance and growth of their naturally curly hair. While they documented their own natural hair journeys, they also began a dialogue with other woman, asking questions, educating and connecting with one another.
Many of the women who are now at the helm of the top blogs started without a clear path. They sought out information on websites and forums, connecting with other women to ask questions and share curl care tips. Without any formal training, many women shared their own personal suggestions. Now, the internet is a smorgasbord of women sharing their own personal curl care experiences and techniques. Many of these women have become icons in the natural hair care world and what started as a hobby has blossomed into a lucrative business for many. Many of them are beginning to delve into product endorsement and raise awareness about having natural hair, from the good to the downright ugly (such as people touching their hair without asking.)
