Taking Control Of Your Curls

Have you ever felt as though your curls are a mess that can’t be tamed? For many women, learning to love and embrace their natural curl texture is something they learn to do. It’s easy to feel as though your curls are getting the better of you. Here’s how you can take control of your strands to learn to love your hair!

Protect overnight:

Great curls start with great overnight protection. Invest in a good quality silk scarf or satin bonnet to help keep your curls from dehydrating or pulling on your cotton pillowcases. If you don’t want to wear silk, sleep on it! A smoother pillowcase will reduce the friction on your hair and allow your strands (and skin) to retain essential moisture.

Develop a routine:

Do your research and develop a curl care routine that works for you, your time, and budget. Every curl is different, so what you need might vary from what your family, friends, and other curly girls do. Practice a few times when you’re not constricted for time so you know how long it’ll take you to get your goals accomplished.

Scalp massages:

Having a healthy scalp is a critical part of this process. If your scalp is healthy, it’s a great foundation for healthy curls. Incorporate regular scalp massages into your curl care routine. This will help break up product and oils that might have built up on your scalp, increase blood flow, and is very relaxing! You can use your bare fingertips to work your scalp in slow, even circles or add oil for an extra treat.

Focus on yourself:

Whether this is the start of your curly journey or you’re a seasoned curly girl, it’s important not to benchmark against others. No one has the same type of curls and so comparison will be the thief of your joy. Instead of envying your favorite blogger’s curls, instead focus on yours. What do you love about your curls? What do you want to improve about them? How can you make your experience with curly hair better? That’s not to say you can’t enjoy product reviews or relate to other peoples’ experiences but just remember your experience is your own!
