How To Use The Curly Girl Method
Clarify:
Before beginning this method, wash curls with a clarifying shampoo. This is because your curls need to be refreshed and have all impurities removed.
Skip sulfates:
When selecting the products to be used going forward, toss any that contain sulfates, parabens, drying alcohols, or waxes. Any of these ingredients go directly against the Curly Girl Method’s recommendations and can be harmful to your strands. Try to select all natural products.
Cowash:
Skipping shampoo might feel odd, but it’s time to embrace cowashing. Using a conditioner to wash will break up residue and build up without stripping curls of moisture. Massage your scalp in circles to remove build up and allow the cowash to rinse through your strands.
Detangle:
When detangling, make sure to use a wide toothed comb, your fingers, and create plenty of slip with oil or a conditioner. This will ensure the knots can be safely removed without damaging delicate strands. Tearing or pulling at the knots will lead to breakage, preventing curls from remaining healthy or growing out.
Application:
Before drying curls, apply product generously to sopping wet curls. Curls will be able to absorb more product while wet, allowing for the product to work better. You’ll also need to apply less.
Drying:
The days of rubbing your curls dry with a terry cloth towel are past. While that worked fine when you were a kid, terry cloth is no good for curls. Instead, invest in a microfiber towel or use an old t-shirt to squeeze water from your curls. This will allow curls to retain shape without being damaged, and will help minimize frizz. Try to avoid the overuse of heat when drying your curls. Allow to air dry, or use a diffuser on a low heat setting.
