We often hear that it’s not a great idea to sleep on wet curls. In fact, most recommend making sure you build in enough time to your curl care routine to let your strands completely dry before heading to bed. However, we know that we’re humans and that isn’t always going to happen. Sometimes, life gets in the way! Therefore, it’s important to know how to sleep on wet curls , and get the most out of your strands the next day. If you have any great tips or tricks for managing wet curls overnight, don’t forget to let us know!
Start your washing routine about 2-3 hours before you get to bed, which will give you sufficient time to make sure you give your curls the right care. Follow your normal wash and style routine, as if you were about to head out instead of slipping between the sheets.
If your curls are prone to falling flat, you can use some extra gel, or an extra hold gel for these times. This will help your curls hold their cast overnight, with less risk of falling or getting flattened. You can then plop your curls to allow them some time to dry, as well as letting your strands go into their natural shape before going to sleep. Allow your curls to stay in the towel or t-shirt as long as possible to absorb as much moisture as possible. Ideally, your curls should be at least 50% dry before heading to bed, but drier is better.
Before going to bed, remove the towel or t-shirt, and scrunch your gel into your curls. Then, flip your strands over and slide a buff over your head. Use this to help hold your curls off your face, as well as give your strands volume overnight. If you don’t have a buff, a very loose pineapple or bun can work as well, or you can try a scarf. Make sure you’re using a satin or silk pillowcase so you don’t damage your curls.
In the morning, remove your buff or protective style and gently shake your curls out. If your curls are still gel cast, break the cast and add leave in conditioner or a refreshing spray as needed to help your curls bounce back into place. Enjoy your beautiful, overnight curls!
