Have you ever noticed how amazing your curl pattern is when your hair is wet? Somehow between wet and dry that pattern can seem to disappear. Despite following all the “how tos” when it comes to curl care, it can be really frustrating when your curls don’t stay defined. Here’s how to preserve your wet curl pattern.
How To Preserve Your Wet Curl Pattern
Shingle method:
This method is easy. To achieve it all you need is clean, wet curls. Take your curls section by section using very small amounts. Apply curl defining gel to each individual section, making sure to completely saturate each area. Finger coiling can also be used to help define curls. Use a diffuser to encourage quicker, even drying or allow your curls to air dry.
Avoid towels:
We’ve all heard it. Avoiding towels is one of the best ways to preserve curl patterns and eliminate frizz. Instead of reaching for a terry cloth towel, use an old t-shirt or microfiber towel to sop up excess water. Squeeze water out of your hair section by section, applying product as you go. Cup and squeeze to help curls retain their pattern. The key is to avoid over touching your curls while they’re drying, as that can disrupt the pattern.
Comb and pray method:
Begin with wet hair and apply leave in conditioner to small, individual sections. After applying to the first section, comb through that section with your fingers or a wide toothed comb to ensure even application. Do this repeatedly so you can see the curl pattern becoming more defined. After you’ve finished with the leave in conditioner use a curl defining gel, creme or mousse and apply to the sections using the prayer method. This will ensure every strand gets evenly covered. Once again, avoid touching your curls after product application until they’re completely dry.
