When it comes to growing out long, kinky coils, many curlies get frustrated. While your friends seem to grow long hair in a matter of months, it can feel like it takes years. Achieving length when you have tight coils can seem impossible, but we promise it’s possible. There are a few tips and tricks that can help you get the length you’ve always dreamt of.
Low manipulation: As tempting as it is, try to keep your hands out of your curls. Avoid touching them as much as possible, especially while they’re drying. When you do need to style your curls, select low impact styles that can last for a week or more without pulling tightly on your edges. When styling, use a leave in conditioner to create slip. Use your fingers to gently detangle any snarls while your curls are damp. When you do have to style with heat, make sure to use a protectant before applying heat to your curls.
Moisturize frequently: Kinky coils tend to be the driest of the curl types, because it takes so long for natural oils to work down the shaft. Consider upping your deep conditioning treatments to twice weekly. After deep conditioning, use the L.O.C. method (liquid, oil, cream) to seal in moisture. Try to limit the amount of times you shampoo your curls to twice monthly and cowash in between as needed. After cleansing, make sure to seal your ends with butter or oil.
Stay healthy: Long, healthy curls start from the inside. Drink tons of water and do your best to maintain a healthy, well balanced diet. Foods high in protein, vitamins and minerals will encourage healthy curl growth. Take a daily multi vitamin and a biotin supplement to help encourage strong curls. Avoid too many saturated fats or high sodium foods in your diet. Make sure you’re getting plenty of regular exercise, which will increase blood flow and encourage growth.
