How To Have A Great Wash Day Routine

Taking care of curly hair is no joke. A lot of time, energy, and resources go into having fabulous curls. When it comes to taking care of curls, having a great wash day routine can help. Wash day can take a lot of time, but it doesn’t have to become a task that you dread if you have it down pat. Here’s how to have a great wash day routine.

Prepoo:

This process helps prepare your curls for cleansing. It helps them retain moisture so you aren’t left with a frizzy mess. You can use coconut oil to slather on your strands from midshaft to ends. Some curls also opt to use a heavier oil such as castor or olive on on their ends. Allow to sit for 60 minutes.

Shower:

You’re going to need to wash your curls with warm water. Avoid using hot or cold.  Warm will soften your hair and any remaining hair product, dandruff, or build up, allowing it to be rinsed away. Shampoo using a sulfate free, gentle cleansing shampoo or a cowash. Some curlies will also utilize a clarifying shampoo once in awhile if they feel as though they have a lot of build up.

While in the shower, add conditioner. Make sure to opt for a silicone or paraben free product. Once you’ve rinsed away the shampoo and oil, apply from mid shaft to ends. You can then use a wide toothed comb or your fingers to detangle, removing any knots or tangles one at a time. Rinse with cool water.

Styling:

Once you’re done in the shower, use an old tshirt or microfiber towel to gently squeeze excess water from your strands. Don’t rub or fluff your curls. Once curls are damp, apply a leave in conditioner to help strands retain moisture. This will make them less likely to tangle and easier to style. Apply oil, then cream. Style and go.
