If you’ve been around for a bit, you probably already have heard about cowashing your naturally curly hair. Cowashing is a way that protects your curls while also getting them clean. However, there is a bit of a knack to getting the most out of a cowash. Give your curls a break, and take a minute to learn about how to get the most out of your strands.

Start by finding a conditioner that works well for your curl type. For your every day cowash, you won’t want to use a heavy deep conditioning treatment. Instead, opt for something that is hydrating, and can create a lot of slip. Remember, not every conditioner is going to work great for your curls, so try a few out to find the one you like best. You can also buy cowashes as well.

Hop in the shower, and rinse your curls with warm water. Make sure your curls are thoroughly saturated. The water should be warm to loosen up dirt and oil, without being too hot which can stress out your scalp or dry out your strands. It should take 2-3 minutes to completely saturate your curls.

Then, grab your conditioner or cowash, and apply a small amount to your hair. Rub the product throughout your hair, using your finger tips to massage it into your scalp. Pull the rest of it throughout your strands, so your entire head is covered. Grab more conditioner or cowash if you need.

Once your hair is covered, you can use this time to detangle your strands. Use a wide toothed comb, or your fingers, to work through knots and tangles. Remember not to pull or tug on your curls so you don’t damage your hair. Allow the conditioner to stay in your curls for a bit, then rinse, rubbing all of the conditioner off your scalp. You can leave some throughout the bottom of your curls as a leave-in conditioner.
