Many curly girls spend the majority of their lives fighting against what they were born with. There’s no doubt that curls can be difficult to manage. Many curlies grew up with parents who didn’t know how to manage their curls, or felt they needed to straighten them to fit society’s beauty standards. However, understanding how to care for your curly hair can make all the difference. In this article, we will focus on how to correct wash your curls so you have a great foundation.

Washing:

Ditch the shampoo. Curly hair is drier than other types of hair. Therefore, your hair needs more moisture regularly. Skip the shampoo in favor of no poo or cowashing techniques. Your curls won’t be gross or weird if you don’t use shampoo. In fact, they will be healthier and easier to manage.

Use conditioner. Instead of harsh cleansers, wash your curls with conditioner. Apply conditioner to your hair and massage into your scalp to break up build up or dandruff. This will also encourage blood flow to help your hair grow. This is a great time to use the slip created by the conditioner to work out any tangles or knots.

Clean scalp. Every few weeks you’ll want to treat your scalp to a detoxifying treatment. You can buy a clarifying shampoo, or use a baking soda and apple cider vinegar mix to get your scalp clean. Spend a good amount of time really scrubbing your scalp with your finger tips to help remove any remaining build up.

Products:

You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get great curl care products. You can find great choices at your local box store, pharmacy or supermarket. These three products aren’t very expensive and can be found just about anywhere.

Conditioner: TRESemme Moisture Rich Vitamin E. This is a low cost conditioner which still offers great hydration.

Oil: Shea Moisture, Raw Shea Butter Reconstructive Elixir. You can use this to help seal down strands before applying gels and other products.

Styling Gel: TRESemme #4 Tres Gel. This product provides great hold without creating crunchy, stiff curls.
