Nothing is worse than having a wet gelled look when it comes to your curls. However, a lot of curly girls feel like this is an unavoidable part of the curl process. However, we’re here to tell you that simply isn’t true. You don’t have to have 2000s-era curls any longer. Here’s how you can avoid the wet gelled look and get your curls looking absolutely amazing.
Have the right products:
Part of the problem can arise when you’re using a hair gel that’s too heavy for your strands. A gel meant for thick, kinky coils is absolutely going to be too heavy. Therefore, you’re going to want to spend some time figuring out which strength of product is right for you. Additionally, some curly girls will find that they don’t need gel at all, and a curl cream or mousse works just fine as well. The same rule of thumb applies: to make sure your curls don’t get sticky or clumpy, you’re going to want to make sure you aren’t overdoing it with products.
Apply correctly:
Another major thing to consider is making sure you’re not using products in the incorrect order. Instead, apply your gel very last. Usually, you will want to make sure you’re applying your leave in conditioner, mousse or curl cream if any, and then gently apply your gel throughout your curls. Apply a thin coating to your hands, and scrunch upwards or use the prayer method to smooth the gel throughout your strands. Then, allow it to dry completely.
Break the cast:
Lastly, many curly girls run into this issue because they aren’t breaking the cast after they apply gel throughout their curls. That crunch, slicked look is created by the gel forming a thick crust on top of your curls. After your hair is completely dried (no wet spots at all!) you’ll need to break the cast in order to get soft curls. Don’t worry; if you’re using the right products your hair will stay. After curls are dry, gently scrunch them upwards. This will break the cast, and leave behind soft curls.
