Hey, curlies! As you are well aware, all curls are not created the same. Each curl pattern is unique and therefore needs different kinds of care and maintenance. We are bringing you some care tips based upon the type of curl you have.
Loose curls: Loose curls are often more likely to droop or wilt under the weight of too much product. For styling success, use a clarifying shampoo monthly to remove gunk and build up. In order to keep your newly cleansed curls bouncy and shiny, opt for a moisturizing styling cream that have ingredients designed to condition. This will provide grip and hold, keeping your delicate curls from falling.
Corkscrew curls: Despite sharing a name with the essential tool for breaking into your favorite bottle of wine, corkscrew curls are very delicate and prone to breakage or frizz with over handling. An easy fix? Toss the cotton towels and instead use a microfiber towel to blot your curls dry. To keep your delicate coils from frizzing up while styling, make sure to avoid heat and using moisturizing products. A lightweight styling cream will give your hair the bounce it needs.
Z shaped curls: These curls are very fragile and therefore prone to breakage. While some stylists recommend protective styling like twists or braids, careful care and maintenance can still result in naturally wearable curls. The trick? Don’t over moisturize these sensitive curls! Loading these curls with too much moisture can result in breakage, so don’t forgo deep conditioning, but do so with caution! Once a week should be plenty.
S shaped curls: Lucky girls! You’ve gotten the curls that best retain moisture, so feel free to wash and go with a good leave in conditioning product to minimize frizz. Coconut oils and smoothing protein products are ideal for this type of curl. You also have the luxury of prepping your curls before bed (cutting way down on your morning prep!). Do so by utilizing a curling serum through your curls and then twist two sections together, securing with an elastic. Repeat all over your head to reduce frizz, maintain moisture and enhance your curls. In the morning, remove the elastics and enjoy your ready to go curls!
