As curly haired girls, we all know it can be challenging to find the right ways to manage your curls. Lupita Nyongo’s’ stylist Vernon François shares his tips and tricks on achieving and maintaining amazing curls. We’ve selected our top 5 tips, but to see the rest you can check them out here .
Cowash those curls: If you haven’t yet, it’s time to consider jumping on the cowash bandwagon. While Vernon sells his own brand of cowashing shampoo here , you can create your own with shampoo and conditioner to get the exact right formula for your curls. Check out his video tutorial below for cowashing.
Ditch the comb: Forget the brushes or wide tooth combs. Your fingers are your best curl detangling tools. Begin your detangling process from your ends, working your way up to your scalp. Proper detangling takes time and should be done gently to prevent breakage and hair loss.
Diffuse (correctly): Aiming your diffuser at your curls and turning the heat to high might get your curls dried faster, but you’ll be left with a frizzy mess. Diffuse your hair in sections, while pointing the hairdryer at a 45 degree angle upwards. This allows your curls space to “breathe”, and doesn’t allow them to get too hot. To avoid overdrying your curls, work through the process by drying your curls in intervals of 45-50 seconds each. Stop when your curls are 90% dry and allow them to air dry.
Rub those products all over: Your hands, that is. Don’t just apply your favorite curl care products to your palms but rather all over your hands. This allows you to reach places you didn’t realize you were missing while styling.
Protect those curls: Protecting your curls while you sleep is crucial. Gather them onto the top of your head in the “pineapple” shape, and cover with a silk bonnet or old, softened t-shirt. This will drastically reduce frizz and harm to your curls.
