Managing your naturally curly hair in the winter can be a struggle.  The drier, colder air mixed with hats and scarves tangling up your curls can make for some major frizz and tangles. If you’re trying to figure out the best washing technique for your natural curls, YouTuber DiscoveringNatural has shared her techniques for getting your best winter curls.

Step 1: Start with a hot oil treatment. To get much-needed moisture into her curls, she uses Jamaican Mango & Lime Black Castor oil. Dampen your hair and then warm the bottle to activate the oils and then apply to your curls, working from the mid shaft down to the ends. Work through small sections of your curls to ensure your curls are completely covered. Cover your oil-saturated curls with a cap and sit under hit for a minimum of 20 minutes.

Step 2: Shampoo your curls. Following your hot oil treatment, your hair will be ready to shampoo. Wet your curls, paying special attention to your scalp to help loosen any buildup. Begin by using a moisturizing shampoo and applying it directly to your scalp. Use your fingertips to work the shampoo across your scalp to loosen any buildup. Follow this scalp massage by washing the length of your curls.

Step 3: Deep condition. After you’ve completely cleansed your curls, follow up with a deep conditioning treatment. During the winter months, you may need to increase the amount of times you deep condition. DiscoveringNatural recommends at least once per week. Make sure you use plenty of product to completely cover your curls. Follow this with more oil to seal the deep conditioner into your strands. Cover your hair with your cap and apply heat for 30 minutes.

Step 4: Apply moisturizer: Once you’ve deep conditioned your curls, begin by adding moisture to your scalp. Massage your scalp to make sure the oil gets through your curls evenly. Finish by applying your favorite leave in conditioner throughout all of your curls. Follow up by sealing it in with oil.
