While the Curly Girl Method is beloved by many curlies, including those with wavy strands, around the world, it’s true it can be a bit restrictive. So if you’ve been practicing it for awhile and feel as though you have a firm understanding of it, you might be in the mood for mixing it up a bit. If so, you’ve come to the right place! Here are tricks and tips to modify the Curly Girl Method for wavy hair. Give these suggestions a try, and let us know how they work for you, or if there’s anything you’d add for other curlies to know.
Start with the CGM:
Before you get started, make sure you have a firm understanding of the foundation of the method. This will prevent you from making mistakes that could ultimately harm your curls. The rules, guidance, and suggestions are good for wavies and curlies alike.
Use lightweight products:
One modification you might need to make is in regards to products. While those with curls can often get away with heavier products, curly wavy girls need to go with something more lightweight to avoid having strands dragged down. Remember, the heavier the products, the more likely your waves won’t bounce up into curls. Focus on hydrating lightweight products instead.
_Clarify monthly:
_While curly girls are often recommended to clarify every 6-8 weeks, wavies might need to do so more regularly. Wavy hair is more prone to build up, and that can also cause waves to fall flat. Clarifying will remove this build up and allow your strands to absorb products better, so they work more effectively and your strands hold up.
Saturate thoroughly:
Seaweed hair is for more than just mermaids! Detangle your curls while they’re completely soaked, using a huge amount of conditioner. You want your curls to achieve a slippery, slimy feel, much like strands of seaweed in the ocean. If you can run your fingers through it easily, you’ll know your curls are completely soaked and hydrated.
