Are you feeling as though your strands could use a little bit of that sun-kissed summer glow? Even though summer is beginning to wind down for many of us, there’s no reason why you can’t hang onto the look of days spent basking in the sun on the beach or by the pool. However, if you’d like to achieve this look without hitting the salon, there are a few tricks you can try at home. Here are some natural ways to lighten your curls. If you’ve ever given any of these a try, make sure you let us know what worked for you in the comments.
Natural ways to lighten your curls
Vitamin C:
If you’re already coloring your curls, Vitamin C is a great choice for working towards lighter strands. It can work in tandem with both natural strands, as well as chemically treated curls. Combine Vitamin C tablets (after crushing them) or packets with your regular curly girl shampoo. This will help strip your strands, leaving your hair lighter. If you want a more controlled approach to application, you can crush up tablets, or use a Vitamin C powder, and add it to water. Mix, and put in a spray bottle. Apply where you’d like to see lighter strands, and allow it to sit for 30 minutes. Your strands should begin to lighten naturally.
Apple cider vinegar:
While apple cider vinegar is lauded as one of the best natural curl care treatments around, it also has a secret use when it comes to lightening your curls. To get the benefits from this natural treatment, you can combine ACV with water, and apply it to your hair using a spray bottle. It will help lift color, without being as damaging as lighteners can be. If you happen to have darker hair and don’t want to your curls to lift to lift reds or oranges, try white vinegar instead to achieve cooler tones.
Baking soda:
Already used in a lot of ways for whitening, baking soda can help brighten up your strands as well. It’s relatively gentle when compared to other hair lightening products out there. To get a lightening paste for your curls, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1/4 cup of water to create a paste. Apply it to your hair and allow it to sit for 60 minutes. Your curls should lift about 1-2 shades lighter. Curly girls with lighter hair will probably notice the most difference from this treatment.
