Sadly, there is no way to actually heal or repair damage to your curls. Once it’s done, it’s done and the only surefire way to remove it to cut it off. This can mean a small trim, or in some cases more drastic measures such as a big chop are needed. While there are tons of products out there promising to repair or heal damaged hair, it simply cannot be done. However, there are plenty of ways (those products included) to help minimize damage and help prevent it from increasing. For those who like a natural approach to curl care, consider using olive oil to minimize damage.
Why it works:
Damaged curls are in need of nourishment and some extra TLC. Olive oil (OO) is loaded with vitamins that can help keep curls soft, and damage low until you can get an appointment with your stylist. OO features Vitamins E, K, and D3, as well as monounsaturated fatty acids.
Benefits:
There are tons of benefits to going natural with your curl care, and OO has a ton as well. Using OO on your curls can help make those splits much more manageable, it softens curls, moisturizes dry, distressed strands, and can even increase volume. It works really as a hot oil treatment.
How to use it:
As mentioned above, OO works really well as a hot oil treatment. Depending on how much hair you have, warm 1-4 tablespoons of olive oil in the microwave. Although it’s called a hot oil treatment, you don’t want it to actually be hot, or that could burn your scalp. Warm is just fine. Massage the warm oil into your scalp, taking your time to move your fingers in slow circles to stimulate the scalp. Pull the oil throughout your strands, and allow it to sit for at least 60 minutes. You can also cover your curls with a shower cap and sleep with it on if you have a lot of damage. Shampoo the oil out in the morning, and follow up with your regular conditioner.
