When you have curly hair, you might also find yourself struggling with dandruff. Curly hair is usually a bit denser than straight strands, which can make it more difficult to give your scalp a good scrub. Additionally, when you add less wash days, and products, you might find yourself a bit more susceptible to dandruff. While annoying, it’s very treatable!
Dandruff is caused by a fungus on your scalp, and can be perpetuated by build up of product, as well as oils. Therefore, you’re going to need to get rid of the build up on your scalp to encourage healthy blood flow and growth, as well as get rid of the fungus. If you’ve got flakes and an itchy scalp, try this natural treatment for dandruff. If you give it a try, and it works for you, don’t forget to let us know!
What you’ll need:
This treatment is seriously one of the easiest ones you can do. Gather virgin coconut oil, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and tea tree oil, or peppermint oil. You can also use lavender oil as well.
Take 1/4 cup of coconut oil, and gently melt it. You don’t want it to boil. Then, add in 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice. Fresh is best, but in a pinch you can use pre squeezed, just make sure it’s 100% lemon juice without additives. Then, add in 5-10 drops of your preferred oil. All of the ones listed above will work great to combat dandruff.
What to do:
Start by washing your curls with a gentle cleansing shampoo and warm water. Use conditioner if you need, and then separate your curls into 4-6 even sections. Take your treatment, and massage it into your scalp, using your fingertips. Really work the product in, and pull it through the rest of your strands. Then allow it to sit for about 30-60 minutes before washing out with shampoo. Follow up with a conditioning treatment.
You can use this treatment once or twice a week until the dandruff clears up.
