The Curly Girl Method Made Easy
Products:
Before getting started, review the products you already use. There are several harmful ingredients in products and therefore need to be eliminated. Avoid anything with sulfates such as sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, or sulfonate. Additionally, skip products containing silicones, such as dimethicone or amodimethicone.
Sulfates can strip natural oils from your curls, leaving them dry and frizzy. Products that create a nice rich lather, such as a body wash, will have sulfates listed among the top ingredients. Sulfates are a detergent, which creates the bubbles we’re used to seeing when washing up.
Silicones coat curls, making it difficult for moisture to penetrate into your hair. When using products with silicones, you’re essentially coating your curls in plastic. While this might help manage frizz in the short term, it makes it difficult to manage hair in the longer term.
Investigate:
Purchasing products can seem daunting, but it gets easier. Many select products for curls based upon the smell, advertising, or price. While you can still get great deals on products, it’s going to be important to spend time doing research into what you’re purchasing. Read the ingredients on the back of the bottle, particularly the first 3 to 5. The product is primarily made of these ingredients.
