If you’re trying to grow out your curls, you might sometimes find yourself frustrated by the amount of time it takes to actually get those strands some length. While curly hair grows at the same 1/2 inch a month rate as all other hair types, it can take longer to see the sought-after results. This is because curls grow in a spiral shape, making length harder to notice. However, you can give your curls an extra boost by adding rice water treatments to your curl care routine. Here’s how to use rice water to grow curly hair.
How to make it:
Sometimes people can get daunted by the process, but it’s really very simple. Start by gathering your ingredients. You’ll need 1/2 cup of clean, dry rice, 3 cups of filtered water, 5-10 drops essential oil of your choosing.
Place the rice in a clean container, such as a bowl, and pour the rice in. Then, mix it around until all the rice is completely saturated and swirling in the bowl. After that, cover the bowl or container (a Tupperware would be great for this) and leave it to sit for 2 days at room temperate.
Once the rice has sat, the water should have a cloudy, milky appearance. Strain the water into another bowl, removing the rice. You can discard the rice or use it to cook with. In the bowl with the water, add the essential oils of your choosing. Some good choices would be peppermint, lavender, chamomile, rose, or bergamot for its great scent.
Take your bowl to the shower, and completely wash your curls, but don’t condition yet. Between the washing and conditioning, slowly pour the rice water over your head and allow it to drain through your hair. Catch it in the bowl, and repeat until the rice water is gone. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes before rinsing and following with your conditioner.
If you have any rice water leftover, you can keep it in the fridge for up to two weeks. The cold will stop the rice water from continuing the fermenting process.
