Have you ever heard of a rice water rinse for curls? If not, it’s time to get amazed! Rice water is the dark horse of the curl care world, and while it’s been used for a long time in various cultures, it’s now coming to the forefront. It’s also all natural, meaning you’re absolutely in control of what you’re doing. It has numerous benefits, and it’s also very easy to do! Here’s why you should use a rice water rinse on your curls.
There are a few ways you can make a rice water rinse. You can start by fermenting your rice in water. To do this, place one cup of rice into 3 cups of water. Allow it to sit for 48 hours, before draining off the water. Discard the rice. Then, use the water after you shampoo and rinse or dip your curls. Rinse out after a few minutes with cool water, and condition your curls as normal.
If you don’t want to wait for the water to ferment, you can soak the same amount of rice in the same amount of water as above for one hour. Proceed with the rinse as you would above. While this works in a pinch, you might not get as much benefits as you would from allowing the rice water to sit for a longer time.
Finally, there’s the quickest and probably easiest way to make a rice water rinse. Start by rinsing your rice with water, and then take 1/4 cup of rice to place in a medium sized pot. Add 2x the amount of water, and then bring it to a boil. Boil until the water becomes cloudy, then strain out the water. Place the water into a bowl, and allow it to cool. You can then use the water to rinse your curls, or dip your strands into it until your hair has absorbed as much of the water as it can. Wait a few minutes to rinse out the rice water, and follow up with your favorite conditioning treatment.
