Is there anything as glorious as your curls on wash day? Freshly washed curls look and feel amazing. However, the next morning can be a different story. Something happens to those gorgeous curls overnight and they’re often crushed, smushed, or creased in the morning. However, it doesn’t have to be that way! Here’s how to get nice second day curls. Expand the life of your washes, and keep your curls healthier.
How To Get Nice Second Day Curls
The secret is pretty simple: have the best curl care refresher! Here’s the recipe. Not only is it super easy, you can make it right at home with ingredients you probably already have on hand.
What you’ll need:
Spray/spritz bottle
Conditioner of your choice
Gel
Carrier oil
Water
What to do:
One of the great things about making your own curl care products is the ability to customize. These are our ingredient suggestions, but you can add or remove based upon what you think your curls might need.
Add about 1/4 cup of sulfate free conditioner to a bowl. Next, mix in 2 tablespoons of alcohol free gel. Avoiding artificial ingredients in this spray is important. Exclude silicones, fragrances, alcohol, and parabens. All of these ingredients are very drying to strands.
Add 2 tablespoons of carrier oil. For thicker curls, consider heavier oils like olive oil. Finer curls work best with almond, or jojoba oils, as those are lighter and won’t weigh down strands. Fractionated coconut oil is also a great choice and has many different other uses. You can also add essential oils of your choice for scent or to address other curl and scalp ailments.
Once you’ve got all these ingredients, add in enough water to make it liquid without making it too thin. This should be about 1/2 a cup. Filtered water is best.
Mix all the ingredients together and transfer to your spritz bottle.
How to use:
In the morning, remove your curls from your bonnet, cap, or pineapple. Flip strands upside down, and gently shake. Once curls are released, spritz the product throughout. Don’t saturate, but rather dampen. You can then cup the curls in your palms and press upward to reshape strands. Flip back over, and enjoy refreshed curls!
