Even though it’s not often thought about, your curl’s porosity levels are important in establishing your curl care regime. Porosity is your curl’s ability to absorb and retain moisture. There are three levels of porosity; low, normal and high.
If your curls are highly porous, they may be damaged due to chemical treatments and over styling. High porosity can also be genetic (sorry!). Regardless of how your hair became porous, careful treatment of it is necessary. Over moisturizing your curls can result in them becoming too heavy, ultimately leading to breakage. Highly porous curls also loose moisture more quickly, resulting in your hair drying very quickly. You will need to seal moisture in effectively to keep your curls healthy.
How to lock in moisture: Consider using layers of heavy butter moisturizers (think shea) with natural products to quickly lock in moisture. Butters that contain castor oil are perfect for this. Search for products that have ingredients like olive oil, apple cider vinegar and aloe vera high up on their ingredient list. Apple cider vinegar will help balance your curl’s pH levels, ultimately closing down the hair shaft after moisturizing.
