One of the newest apps on the curl care scene, Tress, is approaching natural curl care with a fun, Pinterest-meets-Instagram vibe. The app helps users search through a huge database of styles for black and naturally curly hair. Users can also search for salons that cater to curly hair, the best stylists in the area, product reviews and more.
The app was created by Nigerian and Ghana nationals, Priscilla Hazel, Esther Olatunde, and Cassandra Sarfo. The three women are software developers and so decided to utilize their skills, designing an app they would want to use. After meeting at the Meltwater Entrepenurial School of Technology, they spent about 5 months developing and perfecting their app. The app launched in Nigeria in February 2016.

The company’s CEO, Priscilla Hazel, spoke about developing the app to meet a specific problem, which the founders of the app all faced. They found it difficult to find stylists and products that related specifically to their curl care needs. Now that the app is launched, their goal is to expand their brand and to connect with the lucrative product business in South Africa, Camroon and Nigeria.
Priscilla feels that their app rises above others primarily because it was created by a female team. The women all have experienced the frustrations in finding great natural hair care that their users have. Therefore, they all understand exactly what it is their app’s users are looking for.
