It’s hardly a secret that for hundreds of years, women have been running to their colorists to cover up even the very first signs of gray hair. Women with curly hair aren’t immune to this either, and spend just as much time and energy trying to cover up their silver strands. However, have we ever stopped to think about why that is? Why do we spend so much time and energy trying to cover up gray hair? And now that it’s a trend for younger woman to color their hair gray, is this signifying a shift in how women perceive and accept their naturally graying curls?

There are a lot of reasons for thinking about allowing your strands to go naturally gray. For starters, color is expensive to upkeep and maintain. Since gray curls are a result of melanin leaving the hair follicle, it can be much more difficult to dye and maintain silver strands. However, sometimes we aren’t ready to let our hair go totally gray, and that’s ok! If you aren’t ready to accept a fully silver mane, ask your colorist to blend and soften the gray with some babylights to add dimension to your look.

However, if you’re ready to be done with the hours spent in a stylist’s chair, that’s all right too. Gray curls are a sign of distinction, and an elegant marker of life experience. Those who live long enough to have their hair go silver or gray have been around for some time, and certainly have lots of life experience to show for it. Instead of trying to hide our age, our years, or experience, perhaps it’s time to embrace and showcase it.

Finally, no matter if you go gray at 25 or 75, how you decide to wear your natural curls is absolutely, one hundred percent up to you. There are no limitations on how a woman should appear, on which cut you should take, or how long your curls are. Instead, opt for a style that seems easy, comfortable, is manageable, and above all else, that you feel fabulous wearing. You are the only one walking around in the world with your set of curls, so flaunt what you’ve got! Don’t be afraid to let that silver crown shine.
