Do you feel as though you lose an excessive amount of curls? It can be really frustrating to find clumps of curls on your pillow, in your comb or clogging up your shower drain, especially when you’re trying to grow your hair out. Some loss of hair is natural and most people can expect to lose up to 100 strands per day. However, there are some steps you can take to limit the amount of curls you shed.
Select the right shampoo and conditioner:
Make sure you’re using the right shampoo and conditioners for your curl’s type. Since every type is different, work with your stylist or spend some time determining which shampoo and conditioners will work best for you, and won’t dry out, damage or oversensitize your curls.
Use oils:
If you’re not already, start incorporating oils into your curl care routine. Curlies are naturally prone to having dryer hair, as the natural oils can’t always make it to the bottom of the strands. Help them out by adding in light oils can increase moisture.
Style gently:
Whether you’re a fan of the wash and go or protective styling, make sure you’re being gentle with your curls. Avoid styles that will pull curls back tightly from the face, which can put strain on the roots and cause them to thin out. If you over pull, your curls can become damaged and not grow back.
Avoid chemicals:
Chemical treatments are ultra harmful to your curls. Try to avoid getting your curls dyed, relaxed or permed. Additionally, try to avoid the overuse of heat tools like curling irons or flat irons. Curls that are dried out and damaged are far more likely to shed than healthy curls.
Eat a healthier diet:
Healthy curls start from the inside out. Evaluate your diet to see what you could improve upon to help your curls get a healthy start. Look for ways to increase your iron, Vitamin B and calcium intake to help curls grow more quickly and stay strong.
Invigorate your scalp:
Make sure you’re treating your curls to regular scalp massages. This can be done with oil before wash day, during your cleansing routine or just throughout the week. Use your fingertips to scrub your scalp in circular motions. This will increase the blood flow to your scalp and help encourage curls to grow, as well as break up excess build up or oil which can harm curls.
