Hot oil treatments can help soothe dry, distressed strands. As a result, more and more curly girls are beginning to incorporate this easy home treatment. Fortunately, this is something you can do at home, and it’s super easy. Here’s how to use hot oil on curls.
How To Use Hot Oil On Curls
What you’ll need:
1 cup oil of your choice (or more, if curls are long or thick). Good choices include avocado, olive, or coconut oil.
Bowl
Double boiler
Essential oils (if you’d like)
What to do:
Place the oil in the double boiler. Heat slowly, for about 10-15 until the oil is hot. However, it should not be so hot so as to burn you. Microwaving can damage the oil by removing its natural nutrients, so avoid this method for heating your oil. If you’d like, you can add in essential oils at this time. There are a variety to choose from, so pick which you feel will best benefit for your strands.
Using a spray bottle, dampen your curls. Curls shouldn’t be completely soaked or saturated. Using your hands, distribute the oil completely throughout your curls. Take your time to make sure each strand is covered. You can apply to your scalp and pull through if your scalp is dry. In that case, take the time to massage the oil in with your finger tips. This will encourage blood flow, as well as breaking up build up or damage. Cover your curls with a plastic shower cap and allow to sit for 60 minutes.
Following this treatment, wash your curls with a gentle cleansing shampoo and follow up with a conditioning treatment. This is an excellent treatment to add to your wash day routine as a pre poo. If you have particularly damaged curls, you can do this hot oil treatment in the evening, cover curls, and allow it to sit overnight.
